In 1966, Chevrolet conceived the Camaro, which became one of the most recognizable muscle cars of all time. This year, Chevrolet celebrates its 100th anniversary and the Camaro celebrates its 45th anniversary. In celebration of both milestones, Chevrolet engineers have launched the all-new 2012 Chevrolet Camaro.
The Chevrolet Camaro has certainly been improved upon since its debut, and for a 45-year-old, it certainly doesn't show its age. The V6 engine in a 6-speed automatic transmission has been increased to a total output reach of 323-horsepower and does not compromise its impressive fuel efficiency of 30MPG highway. The SS coupe features an improved independent rear suspension with a 52/48 front-to-rear weight ratio, a rear view camera, power lifting passenger seat, variable-ratio power steering and an incredible direct injection and variable valve timing combine in the new 2012 Camaro LFC V6 engine.
In 1969, 69 regular-production Camaros were installed with ZL1 all-aluminum racing engines. In that moment, those mythical 69 cars became the "pinnacle in Camaro performance" -- until now. The all new Camaro ZL1 has also made its debut this year and is the highest-performing production Camaro of all time. With the most powerful supercharged engine in the world, this model boasts a 6.2L SC V8 engine with 580-horsepower and 556 lb.-ft of torque, and is paired with a sixth-generation intercooled 1.9-litre supercharger to give the ZL1 additional thrust and force. It's no wonder that the 2012 Camaro ZL1, the most advanced Camaro ever, has been deemed "barely street legal."
And just in case you didn't feel we'd celebrated this occasion well enough, the 2012 45th Anniversary Special Edition is offered on the 2LT and 2SS trim levels for both coupe and convertible styles, and pays homage to both the Camaro's impressive lineage as well as its 21st Century revival. The signature exterior includes unique hood and decklid stripes in red and gray and a special Carbon Flash Metallic paint and a 45th Anniversary badge located underneath the Chevrolet emblem on the front fender. Inside, you will see Jet Black leather-appointed seats and steering wheel with a 45th Anniversary logo, and red, white and blue stitching.
Despite its reputation for making hearts race and palms sweat, we were most excited that the Camaro can now add top-notch safety to the list. The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro was not only the first sports car, but the first overall vehicle of any class to receive a perfect five-star score in every individual safety segment of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's New Car Assessment Program. The six categories in which the Camaro performed exceptionally well include frontal barrier crash testing for the driver and passenger, side crash ratings for the driver and passenger, a rollover rating, and the vehicle's overall rating. It's not hard to see why -- standard safety features on every Camaro include antilock disc brakes, StabiliTrak electronic stablilty control system with traction control, six standard air bags to protect heads, chests and knees, an ultra-length steel safety cage, and OnStar Automatic Crash Response.
