Chevrolet Chaparral 2X
Chevrolet has a long history of building ultra-advanced concept vehicles, whether it be for the entertainment industry, like “The Transformers” franchise or for the racing circuit. Chevrolet has once again teamed up with Chaparral Cars to produce a vehicle for a new competitive world, video game racing. The Gran Turismo line of game for the PlayStation franchise has long been held as one of the top driving simulators available. The game is designed that each vehicle reacts in a highly-realistic way thanks to state of the art programming and attention to detail. The Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo, being added to Gran Turismo 6 will certainly be in interesting addition.
Looking at the screenshots of the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X is an experience in and of itself. The vehicle really looks like something from an alien racing team’s drawing board. One of the many unique design choices made is that the driver lies in a prone position with the wheels, more or less, placed at tip of each extremity. A member of the design team described this method of control as being inspired by a wingsuit, used in skydiving.
As of the power source of the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X, this is where things start to get a little science fictionish for our tastes. But the legend goes that the vehicle is powered by a laser-based propulsion system. Nobody is 100 percent on how that would actually work, but it sounds very impressive and fast. Just be glad this is video game and not something you would have to find a place to do an oil change. Also, there are a number of moveable surfaces on the wings that aid in turning as well as increasing downforce.
While the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X is unlikely to come to Don Wheaton anytime soon, it certainly is a fun thing to look at, in terms of what the future may hold for vehicle design and capability.
