What is the safety alert seat?
Automotive safety systems have come such a long way in the last decade or so. Out of the old guard of seatbelts, airbags and crash test scores have come a new array of safety systems to prevent crashes. By this point in the continual development of automotive safety gear, it is no longer acceptable for cars, trucks and SUVs to simply be rolling crash cages. Accidents that never happen are 100 percent effective in preventing injuries. Chevrolet’s available suite of preventative safety systems have been applauded by government safety agencies in Canada as well as in the United States. One of the most impressive Chevy pieces of crash avoidance equipment is the safety alert seat.
There idea behind the safety alert seat is so simple that one could hardly believe it has taken the 21st century to have it be available. At its most basic form, the safety alert seat is simply a standard seat that vibrates when the various computer systems senses there is about to be a problem. The finished product of the safety alert seat that is only in a few Chevy vehicles right now (Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe) actually uses a familiar technology many of us are already familiar with.
For instance, let’s say you are driving your 2015 Chevy Tahoe, that you faithfully purchased from Don Wheaton, and the children in the backseat need to be reminded to stop arguing with the sibling they love so much. Suddenly, the traffic in front of you begins to slow down. The forward collision alert system will begin to engage and provide a series of warning that you need to apply the brakes. One of the those warnings will use a haptic feedback system to vibrate the seat cushion to get your attention. This is similar to the technology on touchscreen cellphones that makes a flat surface feel like you’re pressing buttons.
The other major use of the driver safety alert seat works with the lane departure warning. When the vehicle senses you are drifting out of your lane, the seat will vibrate on the side you’re drifting to get your attention to take corrective action.
