2016 Camaro 200 pounds lighter
We are just about a month away from the unveiling of the Generation Six, 2016 Chevy Camaro. As we close in on the festival being held in Detroit, our American friends have been slowly leaking out information about the high-performance car. Each morsel just makes us more excited for the May 16 ceremony. The latest bit of news comes in from the engineer portion of the initial build team. Chevy, obviously, has access to some pretty fancy computer modeling software. It’s probably takes up more space than AutoCad. All of this work has the potential to make for one of the exciting vehicles of a generation.
The engineering team behind the 2016 Camaro spent more than 9 millions hours of computational time to perfect the driving experience for the car. All of those computations has led to a Camaro body that is 28 percent stiffer that what is currently offered with the 2015 Chevy Camaro, available at Don Wheaton.
“The modeling abilities of computer aided engineering are advancing at incredible rates,” Jim Karlavage, Camaro program engineering manager said in a Chevy press release. “Today, we can accurately model opportunities to add torsional strength without adding unnecessary mass. The result is a lighter, stiffer structure that benefits every aspect of the driving experience.”
There are a number of advantages to having a stiffer body structure for the 2016 Camaro. Chief among those reasons is that engineers ended up having to less math on the back end of the process. The stiffer body meant engineers can more accurately adjust the steering and suspension system because there is less flexibility in the chassis to account for. And because of the overall lighter weight of the 2016 Camaro, weight bearing structures like wheels, tires and brakes can be scaled back.
Camaro engineers shed more than 200 pounds by replacing some elements of the internal structure of the car with lighter weight materials, like aluminum behind the gauge cluster and composite material in the rear suspension assembly. The latter is now 21 percent lighter than in the previously available models.
It will still be a fair amount of time before the 2016 Chevy Camaro is available at Don Wheaton. However, if you have that need for performance and would like to take advantage of the nice weather in a classically-inspired sports car, make an appointment with a Don Wheaton sales professional today. Better yet, take a test drive with us in a 2015 Camaro.
