Custom Cruise Friday
First of all, everyone at Don Wheaton would like to thank you for making the Custom Cruise Friday such a success. We hope you like reading about the cars and looking at the photos as we do working on the feature each week. This week’s car came to us from Don Wheaton parking lot attendant Les Thompson, a long time car collector with an affinity for classic Pontiac convertibles. However, in the strange twists and turns that life sometimes will take, he brought us a 1955 Pontiac Laurentian Sport Coupe for this week’s Custom Cruise Friday Blog. This beautiful Canadian-built vehicle is another excellent example of the classic age automobiles.
Thompson purchased Pontiac coupe 11 years ago and has done a marvelous job of keeping up the restored façade that was completed in 1975 by a previous owner. As for some of the particulars, the hard-top Laurentian is powered by a 261 cubic-inch, V-6 engine and features fan favorite “three on the three” manual transmission. Beyond a few oil changes, new tires and some basic maintenance Thompson has reported no problems in driving the car to various car shows all over the area and beyond.
Among Thompson’s favorite car shows is the Rocking August show in Edmonton, where he placed second two years ago with this car. In the time he’s had the 1955 Pontiac Laurentian, he’s put a lot of miles on the car and isn’t afraid to go on a long trip with his wife Bev by his side the whole way.
A few more details about the car, it has a Continental Kit that came from British Columbia that was added during the 1975 restoration and Thompson added baby moon wheel covers, but still has the original wheel covers in his possession.
Unlike some of the cars we have featured on Custom Cruise Friday, Thompson is a collector and is always looking for the next addition. This means that he is willing to discuss a deal for his current ride. Anybody that has found themselves taken by this beautiful classic sedan should know that its relatively rare with only 2,100 or so ever built in this configuration. According to Thompson, most of the Laurentian models built in Canada were convertibles.
