Lightweight 2016 Malibu
Shoppers at Don Wheaton looking for a high-performing, yet fuel-efficient midsize sedan will want to pay particularly close attention to the 2016 Chevy Malibu. Chevy engineers have seemingly performed the impossible by making the sedan larger while at the same time making it lighter and more fuel-friendly. The short answer is that the Chevy build-team use cutting edge materials and processes to strip approximately 136 kilograms that were present on the 2015 model. These changes have not only made the new Malibu the lightest sedan in its class, but they has also majorly contributed to the excellent estimated fuel-economy of the 2016 Malibu with a score of 6.4 L/100km on the highway.
It may seem counterintuitive to say one of the secrets to the considerable weight loss of the 2016 Malibu is using more steel. Specifically, the engineering team used various different steel alloys in the all-new body structure of the 2016 Malibu. The advantage of using steel in this manner is that the metal can be thinner while still maintaining the proper rigidity. Another byproduct is a more responsive sedan that has excellent crash scores.
“The analysis took the guesswork out of the Malibu’s development, allowing the chassis to be developed with the just-right level of structural components,” Amir Sewani, structural engineer said in a Chevy press release. “After the structure was determined, we started looking at all the components that are attached to it, evaluating where they could be optimized for lower weight.”
Using lighter, but stronger steel alloys has done great things for keeping the 2016 Malibu as light as possible. However, aluminum components are still widely used. The new Malibu sports an aluminum hood, saving three kilograms and certain suspension parts are now made of aluminum.
In just about any passenger vehicle, the engine is going to account for a significant amount of weight. In the 2016 Chevy Malibu, the all-new turbocharged, 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine is almost 40 kg lighter than the engine from last year’s Malibu. It also produces more power and get’s better fuel-economy.
