New Cadillac naming conventions
If you have noticed, we at the Don Wheaton Blog have been pretty enamored with the new Cadillac CT6 sedan and the new 2016 XT5 crossover SUV. Not only do these models represent the beginning of time of great innovation in the luxury automobile space, but each one is also the first to use the new Cadillac naming conventions. Over the years, Cadillac has used some interesting, and iconic, names for their vehicle. Naturally, words like Deville and Eldorado leap to the front of the mind. More recently, Cadillac vehicles have become an amalgamation of alphabet soup, CTS, ATS, XTS, etc. This new way of naming Cadillac models will be better for helping people identify what kind of Cadillac vehicle they are looking at.
What does Cadillac XT or CT mean?
Starting with the new XT5 and CT6, all Cadillac sedan names will begin with “CT” and all crossover names will start with “XT.” According to information our team was able to find online, CT stands for “Cadillac Touring” and XT stands for Crossover Touring.

Do the numbers in Cadillac names mean something?
While we don’t know of an existing scale for the numbers used in Cadillac model names, the numerals should have some significance. What we’ve found is that CT6 means that this model, available at Don Wheaton is the top of the line. The same is theoretically still true for the XT5. Cadillac has send in a number of different places that these two vehicles mark the beginning of a number of new models that will be released at various times over the next few years.

What is going to happen to the current names?
That is a tougher question to answer. The most likely answer is that the models will either be renamed or discontinued in favor of new analogous models. Certainly, Cadillac won’t want to give up the huge gains in luxury vehicle market share they have gained over the last few years with the CTS, or V-Series. In case you’re curious about the Escalade, this one is likely to be the exception to the rule given its worldwide popularity.
