Can I buy a 2017 COPO Camaro?
Given the developments within the newest Corvette and Camaro models, nobody can make the statement that Chevrolet isn’t serious about offering customers the best high performance vehicles or components it can possibly build. Just as in year’s past, potential buyers with the means can enter a contest to be one of the very few people to own the new COPO Camaro. That’s how exclusive this car is – a person has to win a drawing just to buy this out of the box drag racer. For the rest of us, looking at what is capable from Chevy is just as fun. And easier on the wallet.
What is new for the 2017 COPO Camaro?
Chevy’s Drag Race Development Program team started with a Generation Six Camaro SS. The top goal for the program is to build a vehicle that is faster and more durable than ever before.
“More than simply achieving quick ETs in the Camaro, we are exploring the supporting
components that help the car to go quicker with great durability,” Mark Dickens, director, Performance Variants, Parts and Motorsports Engineering said in a press release. “We’ve tested stronger axles and chassis components aimed at improving launch and traction attributes.”
The development team didn’t have to look far for the most robust parts to help improve the final 2017 COPO Camaro product. A few engine and suspension components were lifted from the previous generations ZL1 model.

What kind of gear comes with the 2017 COPO Camaro?
Since the COPO (Central Office Production Order) program started in 1969, the automaker has been building cars to be top contenders in the National Hot Rod Association’s Stock Eliminator class. It shouldn’t be hard to believe that it takes quite a bit to build a dedicated drag racing car. Some of the special parts include:
- Lightweight, adjustable coil-over-strut front suspension
- Four-link rear suspension with double-adjustable coil-over shocks, Panhard bar and stabilizer bar
- Rear axle with an aluminum center section featuring a lightweight steel spool and 40-spline gun-drilled axle shafts
- Lightweight, drag-race manual four-wheel disc brakes (unassisted)
- Custom manual steering rack
- Fuel cell with built-in high-pressure fuel pump
- Unique racing wire harness
Each of the lucky winners will be able to choose among three available LS and LT engine options, which can also be supercharged or breath naturally.
