Custom Cruise Friday
With snow in the immediate weather forecast and temperatures dipping below the freezing mark, it’s time for us to wrap up the 2016 Custom Cruise Friday classic car features. Depending on availability, there will be something filling the weekly space. Judging from metrics on social media as well as the on the Don Wheaton Blog, readers have really enjoyed the series and on our side, everyone has really enjoyed producing them each week. To mark the end of the classic car season, we though we would post some highlights our favorites as well as the most popular features from the year.
Best in Show: Reader’s choice
Among the all of the Custom Cruise Friday features that were produced over the season, we had a tie for the most popular among readers. Coincidentally, both are vehicles owned by Bill Storr, who has had three vehicles profiled. For this year’s crop of vehicles, Storr’s 1959 Pontiac Catalina and 1972 Buick GS Stage 1 were the most viewed features by readers and received the same amount of page views over the season.
Most unique car
Classic cars may be the bread and butter of the Custom Cruise Friday series. However, we appreciate unique and interesting cars from any era whether they are from 50 years ago or last year. You might not recognize Shelly Hauk by name, but you have probably seen her driving around in her always impeccably spotless 2007 Saturn Sky Red Line.
Story of the year
As much as we love cars, we might love the stories and people behind them even more. The best representation of this idea come from Peter Engley and his 2005 Cadillac XLR. Certainly the car is impressive with its blend of Cadillac luxury and Corvette pedigree, but those things pale in comparison to Engley’s love for Cadillacs. Engley voluntarily gave up his driver’s license a few years ago and still chose to bought this instant classic because he loves it. He summed up everything in a simple sentence quoted in the blog, “You don’t need a driver’s license to own a Cadillac.”

Our favorite car
The 1969 Chevy Camaro Z/28 owned by Gerry Gionet was our favorite car profiled in the 2016 Custom Cruise Friday season. Not only is it a beautiful example of a “resto-mod” but hearing Gionet’s story of finding the car and eventually restoring made us appreciate the classic Camaro that much more. In addition to being nearly – if not completely – flawless, Gionet’s Camaro Z/28 is one of the most powerful car’s we’ve ever looking at making 750 horsepower which shakes the ground upon ignition.
Stay tuned to the Custom Cruise Friday space to see what we do for the winter.
