2017 Volt engine wins WardsAutos award
Over the last few weeks, the all-new Chevy Bolt EV has been getting a lot of attention from the Don Wheaton Blog as well as the automotive industry as a whole. Not only is the new all-electric hatchback now available to be ordered from the Edmonton-based dealership, but it has also picked up a much coveted Motor Trend magazine “Car of the Year” award. Not to be left out is the automaker’s second generation hybrid, the 2017 Chevy Volt. WardsAuto has named the power plant (drive unit and range extender) to its 10 Best Engines List for 2017. This is the second straight year the engine has been named to the publication’s “Best of” list and the third overall nod.
Why did WardsAuto choose the Volt’s engine?
“The Chevy Volt propulsion system wins a spot on the Wards 10 Best Engines list for the second year in a row for three reasons,” WardsAuto Senior Content Director Drew Winter said in a press release. “It has a torquey, fun-to-drive personality. It offers impressive electric-only range of 53 miles and efficient gasoline-powered range whenever you need it for anxiety free driving. That is flexibility unequaled in the automotive world. And despite imitations, it continues to be one of the most unique and innovative propulsion systems ever mass produced.”
What Winter is basically saying is something that Chevy Volt fans have known for a number of years: The gas/electric hybrid offers spirited performance with enough measurable torque (294 pound-feet) to make starts very exciting as well as level of reliability that is nearly unmatched in this segment of the global automotive industry.
Drivers of the second generation Volt, like the 2017 version, only use gasoline on 20 percent of trips and have a total range of 420 miles when using electricity and gasoline power. Since the Chevy Volt was first introduced to customers on an international scale, the drivers have recorded more than 1.5 billion miles using stored electricity which as saved about 58 million gallons of gasoline from being burned.
