Is Buick making a hybrid car?
Buick might not be the first automaker a buyer thinks about when they hear the words electric or hybrid – but that appears to be changing for the 2018 model year. So, is Buick making a hybrid car for Don Wheaton customers in 2018? The answer is, yes. Kind of. Eventually, car buyers looking for something with a better balance of performance and efficiency will be able to choose what Buick is calling a “mild” hybrid version of the Buick LaCrosse. This won’t be a fully electric vehicle like the Chevy Bolt nor will it be a true hybrid like the Chevy Volt.
“Executing innovative technologies in an approachable and meaningful way is core to Buick,” Duncan Aldred, vice president, Global Buick and GMC said in a press release. “By adding the eAssist system to the LaCrosse, our technology flagship, we are making electrification accessible to our customers as we chart our course to the future of mobility.”
2018 LaCrosse is playing a new game
At the heart of the new and more fuel-efficient version of the Buick LaCrosse is the automaker’s eAssist system. Without getting into the weeds of complicated automotive terminology, eAssist is basically a battery-powered electric motor that provides the gasoline engine with a boost when starting from a stop. Buick engineers have also implemented engine start/stop technology and added active grille shutters to further aid in overall fuel efficiency.
Do I have to plug it in to charge the batteries?
Unlike other hybrid or electric vehicles, the 2018 Buick LaCrosse with eAssist doesn’t require an external power source. One of the key components of the eAssist system is the Motor Generator Unit which replaces the traditional alternator and generates electricity through the course of normal operation which is then stored in the battery pack. Additionally, vehicles waste a lot of potential energy during braking. Buick makes full use of that potential by using regenerative braking technology to help keep the lithium-ion batteries charged.
