Any vehicle with a seven-seat capacity will inevitably get labeled as a family hauler, but there’s a lot more to the 2022 Buick Enclave than that. The refreshed Enclave with its new front fascia that now fits in with the brand’s smaller models proves that a seven-seat vehicle can be as stylish and desirable as it is practical, versatile, and capable. This is a very good-looking crossover that you’ll be proud to have on your drive or on the road outside your house, even if you don’t need the seven-seat people-carrying capacity.
As well as taking on some of the styling cues of Buick’s current smaller SUVs, the refreshed 2022 Enclave also follows a similar blueprint when it comes to trim levels and drivetrains. There are three different trim levels of 2022 Buick Enclave, and two different drivetrains are available, but if you really do insist on a front-drive version, you’ll have to stick with the entry-level version of this impressive crossover. That entry-level model is called the Essence, but its standard front-drive format can still be upgraded to all-wheel-drive if that’s what you want. The mid-range version of the Enclave is the Premium, and the top-of-the-line version is the Avenir, and both of these trim levels come with all-wheel-drive as part of their standard specification.
With its spacious interior and seven-seat capacity, the 2022 Buick Enclave is a reasonably substantial vehicle, which means a competent powertrain is vital, especially when the Enclave is going to be loaded up with a full complement of people and cargo. Capability is certainly well taken care of here, with all versions of the Buick coming with a 3.6-litre V-6 under the hood that puts out a very useful 310 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque. That impressive power is then sent to the front or all four wheels of the Enclave through a smooth, effortless nine-speed automatic transmission that features overdrive and Driver Shift Control.
Front-drive versions of the Enclave are unsurprisingly the most fuel-efficient, but there isn’t a huge penalty to pay for the extra capability of all-wheel-drive. Front-drive Enclaves are rated at 13.0 L/100 km in the city and 9.1 L/100 km on the highway, while AWD versions are rated at 13.6 L/100 km in the city and 9.6 L/100 km on the highway.
A vehicle designed to carry up to seven people these days has to come standard with a pretty impressive list of safety features, and the Enclave certainly checks that particular box. That’s especially the case with the Premium and Avenir models, which both come standard with the Buick Driver Confidence Plus suite of advanced safety features. This includes Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Following Distance Indicator, Forward Collision Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, IntelliBeam auto high beam assist, Front Pedestrian Braking, Front and Rear Park Assist, and Automatic Emergency Braking.
Entry-level Essence models don’t include Buick Driver Confidence Plus, but they do come with an HD Rear Vision Camera, heated front seats, keyless open and start, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, perforated leather-appointed seat trim, Rear Park Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, remote start, power-adjustable front seats, and tri-zone automatic climate control. There’s also an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes complete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
