The Equinox has been around for almost two decades now, and this year, this highly successful compact crossover SUV benefits from a mid-cycle refresh that will help to maintain its reputation as one of the most popular vehicles in its class in North America. This is a vehicle that does everything buyers in this segment want, and it does it all at a price that’s hard to beat. If you want a daily driver for getting around Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, and Leduc comfortably, efficiently, and affordably, the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox is going to be hard to beat.
Buyers have four different trim levels to choose from in the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox lineup, and there’s also a choice of front and all-wheel-drive formats. The entry-level model these days is the LS as the old L model that largely appealed to fleet buyers is no longer being offered. After that, the range then goes to the LT, RS, and finally to the top-of-the-range Premier trim level. The LS and LT versions of the Equinox are standard front-wheel-drive, but AWD is available for both if you prefer, and you’re happy to pay a little more for that extra capability. However, if you opt for the RS or Premier trim levels, then AWD comes standard with both.
Chevy has simplified the powertrain for the 2022 model year as all versions of the Equinox now come with the same powertrain. The unit that has been retained is a thoroughly modern 1.5-litre turbo-four that puts out 170 horsepower and 203 lb.-ft. of torque, and this offers the kind of performance some rivals only give you if you pay more for an upgrade to the standard powerplant. The power is sent to the front or all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-drive models get you fuel economy ratings of 8.9 L/100 km in the city and 7.7 L/100 km on the highway, while AWD reduces fuel efficiency only slightly to 9.4 L/100 km in the city and 8.0 L/100 km on the highway.
Safety is an important area for a vehicle like the Equinox that will often be bought by families, and standard automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and automatic high-beam headlights across the range help it get a five-star rating from the NHTSA and Top Safety Pick status from the IIHS. Entry-level LS models come pretty well-equipped in their standard form for not a lot of money with the likes of a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 17-inch alloy wheels, active noise cancellation, full power features, cruise control, heated front seats, a rear vision camera, and climate control.
Premier models come with such high-end features as perforated leather upholstery, wireless device charging, memory seats, a heated steering wheel, an HD rear vision camera, and the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system with an upgrade to a larger 8.0-inch diagonal HD colour touchscreen.
The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox has a refreshed new look for the new model year and a few other changes. However, it’s still the fabulously practical, efficient, and affordable compact crossover that’s continually popular with a range of different buyers.
